Salmon Homecoming Monitoring

Did you know that salmon come back to McSorley Creek at Saltwater State Park every fall? Coho and Chum use the stream to spawn after spending some years out in Puget Sound and the ocean.

Volunteer to help count and monitor the salmon returning to McSorley Creek. It is a fun and interesting activity and collects important scientific data.

Training is provided by Trout Unlimited volunteer John Muramatsu. You will learn about salmon and their life cycle, how to identify the different species like coho and chum, and how to collect data on both living and dead fish.

Location: at the “Creek Shelter” in the mid parking lot area next to the pedestrian trail foot bridge and the stone information kiosk. Handouts will be provided and equipment issued for those who volunteer. Waterproof boots

helpful, but not essential for training.

Volunteers work in teams of two walking a section of the creek and collect observations and data. The daily surveys take about an hour each session and typically volunteers sign up for a day of the week that works for them for the Oct-Dec duration. There will be enough volunteers to mix and match teams and fill in as needed.
